Waterhouse at South Bund Hotel. Shanghai.

Cuando ví esta foto me llevó un rato comprender qué era este espacio. Antiguo acuartelamiento de las tropas japonesas en Shanghai en los años 30, este edificio es hoy un hotel con un encanto especial y algunas sorpresas. No hay más que ver esa pared de cristal abierta al lobby por la que se ve una de las habitaciones del hotel. Paredes sin intervenir, ninguna concesión a las florituras. Todo aquí es sobrio y funcional. No sé si lo elegiría para quedarme (con un hermano, arquitecto para más señas, trabajando en Shanghai, seguro que miraríamos más opciones ;)), pero sin duda me acercaría a verlo y a tomarme algo en su terraza con vistas. El proyecto es de la firma Neri&Hu · I must say I’m not sure I would choose this hotel to stay if I ever visit Shanghai (with an architect brother working there, I guess there would be more choices), but the truth is that the first photo captured my whole attention when I first saw it. The unrestored walls, the white ghostly chandelier, the glass wall overlooking the lobby (yes, what you see behind the glass is an actual room), everything is so unexpected that it deserves a visit at least. And I wouldn’t mind enjoying the views from the upper terrace… A project by Neri&Hu.
